Matthew - independent and happy
Matthew lived at home with his Mum before moving into his new home. Now he shares with a friend and couldn't be happier.
I love my independence, and going out on my own whenever I like. I do like living with Tony – we get on well.” Matthew
With just 10 hours of support a week Matthew is really independent, but needs help with some things. “I can make my own snacks, but need help to cook. I want to do a big meal one day – all on my own.”
Matthew volunteers at a café in town and walks there on his own. “I make some of the food, clean the tables and take the orders to the customers. But the café is closing soon, so I hope I will get another volunteering job somewhere else.”
Having a job is a really important part of Matthew's life. The staff have been really supportive and are helping him to find new volunteering or paid roles.
Although Matthew is really settled at home he struggled at first. “When I moved in it was strange. I couldn’t sleep or eat. It was my nerves. The staff made me feel happy and guided me through it all.”
Now staff support Matthew with whatever he needs. This ranges from helping him build confidence, to dealing with tasks around
the house. “I do my own washing and housework. I like the staff being
here as they are very helpful and considerate. They are nice and clear
when they speak to me, as sometimes I struggle to understand - and that’s important.”
