Hello, it's the end of the week once again, and the vlog this week is called ‘What matters?’ Two little words can make all the difference… In health care the question usually asked is, ‘what’s the matter with you?’ In social care we ask the question ‘what matters to you?’
Now I know that both these questions are generalisations. Good practitioners always look at what the problem is and why it matters. Our health affects how we are feeling, just as much as our feelings affect our health – they are just both interlinked.
I think it’s important to talk about this now, in the context of the pandemic, where we have quite rightly focused on the health of people and keeping them safe. Our challenge is to continue doing this and at the same time support people to live their lives in ways that matter to them. And to do this we need to make sure we ask both questions and work out what this looks like in our new world.
