Julie gets her first car at 65

When Julie moved to her new home in April 2024, after living in residential care for 20 years, one thing quickly became clear: she dreamed of having her own car.
Julie often shared pictures of cars she liked and could identify which cars
belonged to different team members. It was clear how much having her own car
meant to her.
During
an early review with Julie, her family and social care manager, everyone agreed
that exploring a Motability vehicle could make a real difference. Although her
finance appointee advised it wasn’t feasible at the time, Julie and her team
didn’t give up.
What
followed was a determined two-year journey.
With support from Manager, Ellie Dent, Julie worked towards her goal by saving and planning her finances. Over time, she was able to meet the requirements for approval. Senior Team Leader, Maria Belen, worked closely with an appointee throughout the entire process to ensure everything stayed on track.
And then – success! In August 2026, all that hard work paid off.
Julie got her car.
Her joy was immediate and heartfelt. She even gave a thank you note to her keyworker, Ester Simple, expressing how much the achievement meant to her.
More choice, more opportunities
Having her own car is already making a difference to Julie's life.
It means freedom to explore parks, farms, seaside trips and other places she enjoys. Julie also feels more confident attending appointments, knowing she has her own transport. Having her own car has given her a real sense of pride and opened up more opportunities to do the things that matter to her.
Julie stayed at the centre of decisions throughout. By listening to what matters to her, working together and taking things one step at a time, everyone involved helped turn a long-held goal into reality.
