Care Quality Commission publishes review of learning disabilities services
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) review of nearly 150 learning disabilities services, prompted by last year's Winterbourne View abuse scandal, has found that nearly half the services inspected did not meet government standards.
CQC says: “Many failings are a direct result of care that is not centred on the individual or tailored to their needs."
Steven Rose, Choice Support's Chief Executive, says: "It is clear that learning disabilities services across the country are failing the people they are meant to care for." Read full statement here.
Choice Support played a pivotal role, along with its partner organisations, in providing Experts by Experience to accompany CQC inspectors on the 150 inspections that form the basis of the report. Laura Broughton, an Expert by Experience, says: "I hope things will change. All people who have a learning disability have the right to good safe services, choices and a good life.” Read Laura's account here.
A Choice Support evaluation of the review conculdes that the invovlement of Experts by Experience has "... undoubtedly added a dimension that was missing in previous review methodologies."
