Experts by Experience

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is the independent regulator of healthcare and adult social care services in England. Acting Together is the name CQC has given to involving people who use services in everything it does. Experts by Experience is a part of Acting Together.

Choice Support is the lead support organisation contracted by CQC to recruit, train and manage Experts by Experience. Experts by Experience are people from the following groups in all regions of England, who have direct experience of using health and social care services:

  • People with a learning disability or autism.

  • People with a physical disability.

  • People with a sensory impairment.

  • People who have experience of being detained under the Mental Health Act.

  • People who have experience of mental ill health.

  • Women who have used maternity services in the last 5 years.

Experts by Experience take part in inspections of services with an inspector, either on a visit to a service, on the telephone or at a group meeting. Their work also includes:

  • consultations

  • CQC staff training 

  • events 

  • developing CQC practice.

Experts by Experience are paid for their work.

If you want to become an Expert by Experience you will go through a normal recruitment process, which includes having a valid DBS check. All experts attend training days and workshops and after agreeing to the code of conduct and confidentiality agreement, are given an ID badge and a casual zero hours contract.
